It has also been reported that due to this energy dissipation, in places like Canal de Ballenas, strong water column mixing produces greater CO2, partial pressure (pCO2,) in the surface seawater than in the atmosphere, even during summer. This causes the sea to be a source of CO2, to the atmosphere. We characterized the spatial distribution of surface pH and pCO2, under "winter" conditions, in order to explore the possibility of the role of the northern Gulf of California (NGC), north of 30ºN, as a source of CO2, to the atmosphere. Our results do not support the hypothesis of a significant air-water CO2, flux in the NGC. Mean surface pC02, during winter 1996 was 355 µatm, with a standard error (s n–0.5) of 5 µatm. This mean was not significantly different from the atmospheric value, at 95% confidence level. Thus, the NGC acts neither as a source nor a sink of CO2. Se ha reportado que en el Golfo de California la energía de marea se disipa con gran velocidad de las grandes islas hacia el norte. prácticamente sin disipación en la parte central y sur del golfo. También se ha reportado que debido a esto, en lugares como el Canal de Ballenas, la mezcla intensa de la columna de agua produce mayor presión parcial del CO2, (pCO2) en el agua superficial del mar que en la atmósfera, aun en verano. Esto causa que el CO2, fluya del mar a la atmósfera. Con el propósito de explorar el posible papel del norte del Golfo de California (NGC), al norte de 30ºN, como fuente de carbono hacia la atmósfera. caracterizamos la distribución espacial del pH y pCO2, superficial, bajo condiciones de "invierno". Nuestros resultados no apoyan la hipótesis de un flujo aire-agua de CO2, significativamente diferente de cero en el NGC. La pCO2, superficial promedio en invierno de 1996 fue 355 µatm, con un error estándar (s n–0.5) de 5 µatm. Este promedio no fue significativamente diferente del atmosférico, al 95% de nivel de confianza. Por lo tanto, el NGC no actúa como sumidero o fuente de CO2.
