Özet:The aim of this article is to identify whether the electoral abstention in Tijuana presents particularities given its border location and the time of residence of its citizens, as well as the characteristics of its political culture. Two sources were used for this study: a) electoral statistics for the period 1988-2016 to account for abstention trends, and b) the analysis of the results of a representative survey of the municipality. With these sources, indices and a logistical regression were developed to examine citizen opinions regarding the meaning of voting, political parties, and their ideological leanings. This study is relevant due to the growing trend towards abstention, which already is a serious and substantive problem for local electoral democracy. In political culture, native abstentionists consider voting as a form of expression regarding the functioning of the political system, and immigrant abstentionists show differential tendencies according to residence time.
