Beskrivelse
Summary:This paper analyzes the everyday practices of a group of women living in Chimalhuacán, Estado de México, as they deal with the risks they are exposed to in public space and investigates how their practices were useful in the development of their own empowerment. This is a descriptive and qualitative gender-based study. They were carried out ten semi-structured interviews. Through content analysis, it was found that, despite the fact that the environment exhibits a high level of insecurity and violence that inhibits the appropriation of public space, and also that traditional gender roles are deeply rooted in their identity and practices, these women nevertheless have reconfigured these conditions to favor their own security and that of their families. This accomplishes a preliminary phase in the process of empowerment in order for them to work for their practical interests which may be transformed into strategic interests.
