An unusual sighting of a killer whale is described for the first time in inshore waters of the Gulf of Morrosquillo. The whale was sighted on 22 March 2015 and it was a solitary individual of unrecognized sex that showed ongoing diving and surfacing behavior at a site 6.3 km from the coast with depths between 20 and 24 m. Its occurrence could be related to favorable environmental and oceanographic conditions and to the potential effect of recent seismic offshore oil and gas operations in the gulf, which may impact a whale’s location and behavior. This report contributes to the scarcity of information about the distribution of O. orca in the Caribbean Sea along the coast of Colombia. Las ballenas asesinas, Orcinus orca, son conocidas como uno de los cetáceos más ampliamente distribuidos, puesto que son habitantes de todos los océanos del mundo, pero su presencia en el Caribe sur ha sido escasamente documentada a la fecha. Un avistamiento inusual de una ballena asesina es descrito por primera vez en aguas costeras del golfo de Morrosquillo. La ballena fue vista el 22 de marzo de 2015 y era un individuo solitario de sexo desconocido que mostraba continuo comportamiento de buceo y salida a la superficie. Este se observó en un sitio a 6.3 km de la costa con profundidades de entre 20 y 24 m. Su presencia podría estar relacionada con condiciones ambientales y oceanográficas favorables y con el efecto potencial de operaciones sísmicas recientes para la extracción de gas y petróleo fuera de costa en el golfo, lo cual puede afectar la localización y el comportamiento de las ballenas. Este reporte contribuye a la escasez de información sobre la distribución de O. orca en el mar Caribe a lo largo de la costa de Colombia.
