description  This work analyzes the plasma level variations of luteinizing hormone (LH) during the reproductive cycle and the percentage of spermiating European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) males fed diets containing different percentages of lipids. The control group was fed with a natural diet consisting of trash fish (Boops boops L.). Two experimental groups were fed with pelleted diets containing different amounts of lipids: one group was fed with a commercially available diet with 10% lipid content (called group 10%), and another group was fed with this base diet enriched to a 22% lipid content using refined fish oil enriched in n-3 fatty acids (called group 22%). The control group exhibited the highest percentages of spermiating males, with values close to 100% from December to March. This good reproductive performance was associated with the highest LH plasma levels, which increased from November to February. In group 10%, the percentage of spermiating males was higher than 75% only between January and March, and plasma levels of LH were low during the reproductive season and significantly lower in February than in the control group. Group 22% also exhibited lower percentages of spermiating males than the control group, but higher than those observed in group 10%; LH plasma levels in this group were significantly lower in December than those observed for the control group. Differences in LH plasma levels between groups are not clearly associated with differences in the fatty acid composition of the diets. These results suggest that dietary fatty acids do not affect LH plasma levels in male European sea bass as strongly as previously reported in females.

Se estudió el efecto de la composición en ácidos grasos de la dieta sobre los niveles plasmáticos de hormona luteinizante (LH) y sobre el porcentaje de machos espermiantes de lubina (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) en el ciclo reproductor. El grupo control recibió una dieta natural (boga, Boops boops L., troceada). Otros dos grupos recibieron pienso con 10% o 22% de lípidos (grupos 10% y 22% respectivamente). El pienso con 22% de lípidos se obtuvo sumergiendo el de 10% en un aceite refinado de pescado rico en ácidos grasos de la serie n-3. El grupo control mostró los porcentajes más altos de machos espermiantes, con valores cercanos a 100% entre diciembre y marzo. Este signo de elevada eficacia reproductora estuvo asociado con los valores más altos de LH, que aumentaron desde noviembre hasta febrero. En el grupo alimentado con 10% de lípidos el porcentaje de machos espermiantes fue mayor de 75% sólo entre enero y marzo. En este grupo, los niveles plasmáticos de LH se mantuvieron bajos a lo largo de toda la estación reproductora, siendo en febrero significativamente más bajos que los observados en el grupo control. El grupo alimentado con 22% mostró en general porcentajes de machos espermiantes menores a los observados en el grupo control, pero mayores a los del grupo de 10%. En el grupo 22%, los niveles plasmáticos de LH fueron significativamente más bajos que en el grupo control en diciembre. Las diferencias observadas en las concentraciones plasmáticas de LH entre grupos no están claramente asociadas con diferencias en la composición de ácidos grasos de la dieta, lo que sugiere que en los machos de lubina los ácidos grasos de la dieta tienen una influencia más moderada sobre la producción y liberación de LH que en las hembras.
