Measurements and experiments made in Metri Bay showed that the abundance of juveniles of F. picta smaller than 20 mm occurs mainly in zones exposed to waves, where barnacle species are dominant. In the intertidal zone, temporal variations in the recruitment of F. picta were positively associated with temporal variations in the recruitment of the barnacle Jehlius cirratus (Darwin). In the subtidal zone, the abundance of F. picta recruits was greater in substrata previously colonized by the barnacle Austromegabalanus psittacus (Molina) than in those colonized by the mussel Mytilus chilensis (Hupé), the most abundant fouling species. These data are added to previous findings that show a decrease in the recruitment of the keyhole limpet in the Mehuín Marine Reserve, where man has been excluded. This in turn has lead to an increase in the populations of a gastropod that has continually diminished the barnacle populations. The results indicate the importance of the variations in the settlement and persistence of barnacle populations in intertidal and subtidal zones for the recruitment of species of high commercial value, such as F. picta. Utilizando protocolos correlacionales y experimentales, se puso a prueba la hipótesis de que en sustratos intermareales y submareales el reclutamiento de la lapa, Fissurella picta (Gmelin), está determinado por la colonización de cirripedios. En mediciones y experimentos realizados en Bahía Metri, se evidenció que la abundancia de juveniles de F. picta, de tamaño inferior a 20 mm, ocurre principalmente en zonas expuestas al oleaje, donde dominan especies de cirripedios. Las variaciones temporales del reclutamiento de F. picta se asociaron positivamente con las variaciones temporales del reclutamiento del cirripedio Jehlius cirratus (Darwin) en la zona intermareal. En la zona submareal, la abundancia de reclutas de F. picta es mayor en sustratos colonizados previamente por el cirripedio Austromegabalanus psittacus (Molina) que por el mitílido Mytilus chilensis (Hupé), que son las especies incrustantes más abundantes. A estos datos se adicionan antecedentes que dan cuenta de la disminución del reclutamiento de lapas en la Reserva Marina de Mehuín, donde el hombre ha sido excluido, lo que ha generado un aumento de las poblaciones de un gastrópodo que ha mermado, de un modo continuo, las poblaciones de cirripedios. Los resultados sugieren la importancia de las variaciones en la colonización y persistencia de poblaciones de cirripedios en las zonas intermareal y submareal, respecto del reclutamiento de especies de alto valor comercial como F. picta.
