Minimum yield (81.6%) occurred in summer and maximum (15.37%) in autumn; 3,6-anhydrogalactose content (3,6-AG) fluctuated from 35.5% to 47.8% between autumn and winter. The sulfate percentage was 0.8% in winter and 2.7% in autumn. The lowest gel strength (217 g cm–2) was recorded in autumn and the highest in spring (892 g cm–2). Melting temperature varied from 92ºC in summer to 98ºC in spring, while gelling temperature was 34.3ºC in autumn and 37ºC in winter. Gel strength was positively correlated with 3,6-AG and melting temperature, and from summer to winter with gelling temperature. Correlation with sulfates was inverse and did not correlate with yield. Higher quality of agar in G. lemaneiformis coincides with the maximum in situ biomass. Se estudió la variación estacional del agar de Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis (Bory) Dawson, Acleto et Foldvik de Bahía de las Ánimas, Baja California, México, en muestras recolectadas entre agosto de 1995 y mayo de 1996. El mínimo rendimiento de 8.16% se obtuvo en verano y el máximo de 15.37% en otoño. El contenido de 3,6-anhidrogalactosa (3,6-AG) fluctuó de 35.5% a 47.8% entre otoño e invierno. El grado de sustitución por sulfatos fue de 0.8% en invierno y 2.7% en otoño. La menor fuerza de gel de 217 g cm–2 se localizó en otoño y la mayor de 892 g cm–2 en primavera. La temperatura de fusión fluctuó de 92ºC en verano a 98ºC en primavera, mientras que la temperatura de gelificación fue de 34.3ºC en otoño y 37.0°C en invierno. Se encontró una correlación positiva entre la fuerza de gel, el contenido de 3,6-AG y la temperatura de fusión, y de verano a invierno para la temperatura de gelificación. La correlación con los sulfatos fue negativa y no se encontró correlación con el rendimiento. La mayor calidad de agar en G. lemaneiformis coincidió con la máxima biomasa in situ.
