An increase in feeding incidence (from 10% in preflexion stage to 80% in transformation stage), in trophic spectrum (from 10 to 20 prey items), and in prey size (from 0.15 to 0.45 mm) was observed in relation to larval development. The index of relative importance showed that copepods in different stages of development dominated the larval diet with >80% of the total prey in preflexion larvae (nauplii and calanoids) and >60% in larvae in transformation (Euterpina spp. and calanoids). The Morisita index defined three groups of sampling stations based on larval diet and zooplankton environment. In the winter group, calanoid copepods, Euterpina spp., and Subeucalanus spp. dominated the diet, coinciding with the predominance of copepods in the environment. In the spring group, the cladoceran Penilia avirostris and ostracods dominated the diet and the zooplankton. In the summer/autumn group, calanoid copepods, Acrocalanus spp., and ostracods dominated the diet, whereas ostracods and copepods dominated the zooplankton. The results indicate that the temporal changes in the larval diet of B. bathymaster are associated with the variation in zooplankton, corresponding to three climate periods that affect the study area. Se analizó la variación temporal de la dieta de larvas de Bregmaceros bathymaster en las costas de Jalisco y Colima durante un ciclo anual (1996). Se detectó un incremento en la incidencia alimentaria de las larvas (de 10% en estadio preflexión a 80% en estadio transformación), en el espectro trófico (de 10 a 20 tipos de presas) y en el tamaño de presa (de 0.15 a 0.45 mm) en función de su desarrollo larvario. El índice de importancia relativa mostró que copépodos en diferentes estados de desarrollo dominaron la dieta de las larvas con más de 80% del total de las presas en las larvas en preflexión (nauplios y calanoideos) y más de 60% en transformación (Euterpina spp. y calanoideos). El índice de Morisita separó tres grupos de estaciones de muestreo a partir de la dieta larvaria y del zooplancton en el ambiente. En el grupo de invierno, los copépodos calanoideos Euterpina spp. y Subeucalanus spp. dominaron la dieta, coincidiendo con la dominancia de copépodos en el ambiente; en el de primavera, los cladóceros Penilia avirostris y los ostrácodos dominaron la dieta de las larvas y también en el zooplancton; y en el de verano/otoño, los copépodos calanoideos Acrocalanus spp. y los ostrácodos dominaron en la dieta, mientras que el zooplancton estuvo dominado por ostrácodosy copépodos. Los resultados indican que los cambios temporales de la dieta de larvas de B. bathymaster están asociados a la variación en la composición del zooplancton, correspondiendo con las tres temporadas climáticas registradas en la zona de estudio.
