Effect of using commercial chlorine (HClO3Na) on the growth of epiphyte algae and their host Gigartina pectinata Daw. (Gigartinales, Rhodophyta)

The red alga, Gigartina pectinata Daw., was cultured under controlled conditions to reduce the growth of epiphytes. Commercial chlorine (HCIO3Na) in different concentrations (750, 500, 250 and 100 µL L–1), with different treatment times (60, 45, 30 and 15 min), was used each week for four weeks. The...

總結:The red alga, Gigartina pectinata Daw., was cultured under controlled conditions to reduce the growth of epiphytes. Commercial chlorine (HCIO3Na) in different concentrations (750, 500, 250 and 100 µL L–1), with different treatment times (60, 45, 30 and 15 min), was used each week for four weeks. The growth of all epiphytes and G. pectinata was adversely affected with high concentrations (750 and 500 µL L–1). At the lowest concentration (100 µL L-1), the growth of G. pectinata was not significantly affected; however, the concentration was lethal for epiphytes. The reduction of epiphytes in each treatment was 100% after four weeks.
