Locations South of Tiburón Island presented a greater stratification of the water column and a greater abundance of diatoms, with dominance of the species Thalassiothrix frauenfeldii. However, Ballenas Channel seems to be a dynamic region which generates the necessary and indispensable nutrients for the activity of phytoplankton. Se realizó un estudio del fitoplancton a principios de 1988 en la parte norte del Golfo de California. Las muestras se colectaron a seis profundidades (0, 10, 25, 50, 75 y 100 m), integrándose a su vez los diferentes niveles de muestreo en una sola muestra para determinar la distribución espacial cualitativa y cuantitativa del fitoplancton. Las estaciones localizadas al sur de la Isla Tiburón, mostraron una mayor estratificación en la columna de agua y una mayor abundancia de diatomeas con dominancia de la especie Thalassiothrix frauenfeldii. Sin embargo, el Canal de Ballenas mostró ser una zona muy dinámica y generadora de los nutrientes necesarios e indispensables para la actividad fitoplanctónica.
