Two categories were considered relevant as a means to analyzing the complexity that characterises present-day state school institutions in the Great Buenos Aires area. The paper intends to reflect on the concept and meanings of border in social sciences, emphasizing its potential to better understand the practices that take place in state schools. The other category analysed is that of "school-family alliance", in order to understand its development during the last decades in view of the extreme poverty that permeates the area studied. El presente trabajo, elaborado en el marco del proyecto “Análisis de experiencias alternativas en el abordaje del fracaso escolar masivo en el conurbano bonaerense”, toma como punto de partida dos categorías consideradas de relevancia para dar cuenta de la complejidad que caracteriza a las instituciones educativas públicas del conurbano de la Provincia de Buenos Aires en la actualidad. Se reflexiona en torno al concepto de frontera en el campo de las ciencias sociales, enfatizando su potencial para la comprensión de las prácticas que tienen lugar en la actualidad en las instituciones escolares. También se realiza una aproximación a la llamada alianza escuela-familia a fin de conocer y comprender algunas de las transformaciones que ha sufrido la misma durante las últimas décadas, en especial en los contextos estudiados, caracterizados por una grave situación de pobreza.
