Landscape study of the Mexico-Xochimilco-Campestre lagoon system. A wetland Ramsar site within a desert city in Northwest Mexico

However, this lagoon system has been ignored in the urban planning of the city. Through the landscape analysis methodology, three landscape units were obtained: a lagoon system, an agricultural area, and an urban periphery. The urban periphery area obtained the lowest value for visual quality, while the lagoon system obtained the highest value. The SWOT analysis indicates the existence of attractive landscape units with eco-tourism and conservation potential, but regulatory restrictions and ignorance on the part of the population complicate their management and appropriation of these landscape units. The results of the survey show that the population with the longest residence time in the city has the greatest knowledge of the existing lagoons, as well as being the most proactive in the improvement proposals for the landscape of the lagoon system. The information generated will be used for the design of channel management and eco-tourism activities, as well as the proposal of socio-cultural activities and environmental education for the population to appropriate and help in the conservation and protection of this wetlands system.
