This work consists of an evaluation of the experience of organizational reform and academic departmentalization at a Mexican public university, the University of Guadalajara (U. of G.), occurred in the period of 1994-2005. It is a research carried out from the perspective of the institutional change analysis, which obeys the interest of carrying out a rigorous evaluation of the process, after 11 years of its institutional operation. From a reconstruction of the context that gave origin and sense to the reform proposal and to the idea of academic departmentalization, some of the results and conditions in which the academic departments of the U. of G operate are analyzed. Finally, some of the problems and challenges that face the departmental structure in this institutional experience are identified. Este trabajo consiste en una valoración en torno a la experiencia de reforma organizacional y departamentalización académica de una universidad pública mexicana, la Universidad de Guadalajara (U. de G.), ocurrida en el período 1994-2005. Se trata de una exploración realizada desde la perspectiva del análisis del cambio institucional, que obedece al interés de evaluar rigurosamente el proceso a 11 años de su funcionamiento institucional. A partir de una reconstrucción del contexto que dio origen y sentido a la propuesta de reforma y a la idea de la departamentalización, se analizan en este trabajo algunos de los resultados y condiciones en que operan los departamentos en la U. de G. Finalmente, se identifican algunos de los problemas y desafíos que enfrenta actualmente la estructura departamental en esta experiencia institucional.
