In a descriptive study a sample of 2756 students represented six knowledge areas was successively surveyed. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were used. The contrast of the general hierarchical organization from the point of view of knowledge areas and the curricular stage confirmed that the most valued traits were responsibility, honesty and knowledge. The least important were team work and communication. Opinion coincidence was identified between knowledge area and curricular stage opinions regarding the most and least important traits. No differences were found between freshmen and senior college students’ preferences. The results seem to favor an explicit incorporation of professional value formation in students. El objetivo del estudio fue identificar y jerarquizar los rasgos más significativos de ser un buen profesional en la opinión de los alumnos de licenciatura de una universidad pública. Corresponde a un estudio descriptivo en el que se utilizaron técnicas de análisis cuantitativo y cualitativo, principalmente se encuestó a una muestra de 2,756 estudiantes. Al contrastar la jerarquización general, por áreas de conocimiento y etapa de formación curricular, se confirmó que los rasgos más valorados son la responsabilidad, la honestidad y el conocimiento. Los menos importantes son: saber trabajar en equipo y comunicación. Se identificaron coincidencias en las respuestas por área de conocimiento y etapa de formación curricular respecto a los rasgos más y menos importantes. Además, no se encontraron diferencias entre las preferencias de los estudiantes de los primeros semestres respecto a los que están por egresar. Se concluye a favor de incorporar de manera explícita la formación en valores profesionales en los estudiantes.
