By using this methodology, productivity growth can be split into two parts: change in technical efficiency and technological change. The results show that an annual average change in productivity of -1.1% was recorded across all universities, with a range between -15.2% and 18.3%, which confirms the hypothesis that the Spanish Public University System is greatly heterogeneous regarding change in productivity over time. However, there are some considerable differences in the change in productivity over time when only research and only teaching are analyzed, with an annual average growth of 14.6% and 6.1% respectively. In the case of research activity, the positive changes are mainly the result of technological progress and greater productivity encouraged by the incentive system for high-impact research by teachers. En este artículo se analiza la evolución de la productividad en 47 universidades españolas mediante el Índice de Malmquist durante el período 2002-2009. Los insumos incluidos en el análisis son el Personal Docente e Investigador equivalente a tiempo completo, gastos corrientes en bienes y servicios, mientras los productos son el Número de graduados y la Producción Científica anual por universidad. Utilizando esta metodología, el crecimiento de la productividad se puede descomponer en dos componentes: cambio en la eficiencia técnica y el cambio tecnológico. Los resultados indican que el cambio de la productividad registró un promedio anual de -1.1% en todas las universidades, con un rango entre -15.2% y 18.3%, lo que confirma la hipótesis de una gran heterogeneidad en el Sistema Universitario Público Español respecto del cambio en productividad a lo largo del tiempo. Sin embargo, existen notables diferencias respecto del cambio en productividad a lo largo del tiempo cuando se analiza sólo investigación y sólo docencia, con un crecimiento promedio anual de 14.6% y 6.1% respectivamente.
