repositorioinstitucional-20.500.12930-72572023-05-09T14:08:24Z Independent mother's income and its relationship with gender socialization of sons and daughters Independencia del ingreso económico materno y su relación con la socialización de género con hijos e hijas Aguilar Jimenez, María Eugenia Ojeda de la Peña, Norma Islas Limón, Julieta Yadira economic income, socialization, family, domestic work, gender ingreso económico, socialización, familia, trabajo doméstico, género The present study shows that when mothers perceive an independent income, family gender relations are transformed. This is a qualitative study based on the analysis of in-depth interviews of a group of mothers living in Tijuana who have low income and children in public junior high-schools. The research findings showed three different scenarios: 1) families where the mother is exclusively a house maker provide a more stereotypical gender education; 2) whereas, families with mothers who have independent incomes shown a greater openness toward gender equity; and 3) families with mother working in the family business present more unequal gender relations, although they make efforts to offer a more equalitarian gender socialization.
