This is a descriptive and qualitative gender-based study. They were carried out ten semi-structured interviews. Through content analysis, it was found that, despite the fact that the environment exhibits a high level of insecurity and violence that inhibits the appropriation of public space, and also that traditional gender roles are deeply rooted in their identity and practices, these women nevertheless have reconfigured these conditions to favor their own security and that of their families. This accomplishes a preliminary phase in the process of empowerment in order for them to work for their practical interests which may be transformed into strategic interests. El artículo analiza las prácticas cotidianas de un grupo de mujeres de Chimalhuacán, Estado de México, para afrontar los riesgos a los que están expuestas en el espacio público y la manera en que éstas prácticas fueron útiles para la construcción de su empoderamiento. Se trató de un estudio descriptivo tipo cualitativo desde la perspectiva de género. Se efectuaron diez entrevistas semiestructuradas.
