Plankton samples, as well as temperature and salinity measurements were obtained during eight cruises in 1992 and 1993. Larval growth was estimated based on daily marks on sagitta otoliths, using the Laird-Gompertz model since it yielded the best hatching size (HS) estimates. Mean daily growth (MDG) and HS showed a cyclical variation pattern. In both years the highest values were recorded in spring (1992, MDG = 0.19 mm d–1 and HS = 1.47 mm; 1993, MDG = 0.23 mm d–1 and HS = 1.58 mm) and the lowest in winter (1992, MDG = 0.14 mm d–1 and HS = 1.08 mm; 1993, MDG = 0.15 mm d–1 and HS = 1.21 mm). The variation pattern of these parameters was directly and closely related to that of temperature. The mortality rate ranged from 0.05 to 0.26, also with a cyclical pattern, but contrary to that of growth and temperature. Cyclical patterns are not well documented for tropical and subtropical areas, such as the southern Gulf of Mexico, where fish spawn throughout the year and spring may be considered the beginning of the cycle, with spring cohorts showing the highest growth rates and those of winter the lowest. The greater change in temperature that occurs from winter to spring may be the factor triggering these events. Se analizó la variación estacional del crecimiento y la mortalidad de las larvas de Syacium gunteri en el sur del Golfo de México. Se obtuvieron muestras de plancton, así como datos de temperatura y salinidad en ocho cruceros durante 1992 y 1993. El crecimiento de las larvas se estimó a partir de las marcas diarias en los otolitos sagitta, usando el modelo de Laird-Gompertz que dió las mejores estimaciones de la talla de eclosión. El promedio de crecimiento diario (PCD) y la talla de eclosión (TE) mostraron un patrón de variación cíclico. Cada año los valores más altos se registraron en primavera (PCD = 0.19 mm d–1 y TE = 1.47 mm, en 1992; PCD = 0.23 mm d–1 y TE = 1.58 mm, en 1993) y los más bajos en invierno (PCD = 0.14 mm d–1 y TE = 1.08 mm, 1992; PCD = 0.15 mm d–1 y TE = 1.21 mm, 1993). Los patrones de variación de estos parámetros estuvieron directa y estrechamente relacionados con los de la temperatura. El coeficiente de mortalidad varió de 0.05 a 0.26, también con un patrón cíclico, pero inverso al del crecimiento y la temperatura. La mejor relación entre el crecimiento y la talla de eclosión con respecto a la temperatura está en su variación cíclica. Los patrones cíclicos no están bien documentados en áreas tropicales y subtropicales como en el sur del Golfo de México, donde el desove de los peces ocurre todo el año y la primavera podría ser considerada el principio del ciclo, con cohortes primaverales que crecen más rápido mientras que las de invierno serían las últimas, con menor tasa de crecimiento.
