We begin by establishing the components of the category and then present arguments supporting their interactions and their location in a theoretical space delimited by the supra-categories “knowledge society” and “lifelong learning”. In addition, possible research approaches for generating and developing theory in this field are proposed. El propósito de este artículo es caracterizar la naturaleza interdisciplinar de la Informática Educativa como categoría epistémica que emerge con fuerza en los ámbitos académicos y como práctica social en diversos contextos educativos. Se parte del establecimiento de los constituyentes de tal categoría para llegar a la argumentación de sus interacciones, su ubicación en el espacio teórico delimitado por las supra-categorías “sociedad del conocimiento” y “aprendizaje durante toda la vida”; asimismo, se establecen posibles abordajes investigativos para generar y desarrollar teoría en este campo.
