The consideration of deficiencies in initial training hinders the possibility of assuming the practicum as a privileged environment for professional initiation and socialization. Professional competence is taken as that stage’s formative reference. Once professional competence and training based on competence have been conceptualized, there is a discussion of some of the implications such assumptions have in the design, development, negotiation and evaluation of the practicum. El presente artículo centra la atención en el trabajo por competencias en el prácticum. La consideración de la insuficiencia de la formación inicial predispone a asumir el prácticum como un espacio privilegiado de socialización-iniciación profesional. Para ello se asume la competencia profesional como referente formativo de esta etapa. Una vez conceptualizada la competencia profesional y la formación basada en competencias, se abordan algunas de las implicaciones de tal asunción en el diseño, desarrollo-gestión y evaluación del prácticum.
