Competencia enacción enseñanza-aprendizaje. This article attempts to show why Varela (1995) bases his theory on the vision of ethics and the development of the virtuous person established by Meng Tzu (Mencius)—a Confucian who lived around the fourth century—in order to determine what is meant by a competent person, implicitly furnishing a promising conceptualization of competence. This paper aims to identify the aspects of Varela’s theory that approximate or differ from the positions of some authors who have studied issues related to learning, namely Piaget (1986) and Freire (1987), as well as in relation to the author’s own doctoral thesis on what constitutes competencies and how they are developed (Silva, 2004).
